The following link is city council memo regarding the proposed "village library" proposed for Adriatica. Below are some of the higlights.
Lease approximately 3,000 sf ground floor space in Adriatica for a small “Village Library”.
The Village Library would provide popular collections, comfortable reading space, WiFi access, and ability to pick up and drop off materials reserved over the internet from the community libraries.
Hours of operation would probably be fewer than at the community libraries, but would be tailored to the customer base. Total number of staff required would be about 2.5 full-time equivalent positions.
This additional location has not been budgeted, Very rough initial cost estimates are:
Start-up Costs:
Finish out: Approximately $300,000
Furniture, fixtures, equipment & collections: $335,000
Annual Operating costs:
Lease: $33.50/sf x 3,000 sf = $100,500
Staffing and other operating costs: $415,000
By comparison, the total operating budget for the current library is approximately $2.3 million annually
Mr. Blackard estimates that the building in which space would be leased could be constructed approximately 18 months from the start date, anticipated in January 2007. The building would be directly across from the harbor with an adjacent parking garage. Additional finish out time of approximately 6-9 months would put the opening date in about two years.
This option not only increases the total library space available and moves us closer to benchmarks (see Special Considerations, below), but also gives library presence in both the southwest (Eldorado) and west-central (Stonebridge) areas of McKinney, providing better access to library materials for more citizens.
If this model is successful, the City might consider using it in other locations as the City grows, either as a temporary measure until a community library can be built near-by, or as a more permanent feature. If not successful, the lease would not be renewed, and all materials can be combined into the collections of the community libraries.
